About Skye

The Person Behind the Work

Skye Shannon has spent more than thirty years navigating the systems, services and spaces that shape whether people with disability can participate fully — or not. That experience isn't theoretical. It's built from decades of living it, questioning it and working to change it.

Her professional background spans health, disability, community services, training and inclusion. She holds a Diploma of Access Consulting and brings a combination of lived and professional experience that's hard to find in one place.

Skye founded Diversicare Solutions because she kept seeing the same gap: organisations with good intentions but no practical roadmap for making inclusion real. She works with councils, businesses, community organisations and tourism operators across regional NSW and nationally — giving them honest, plain-English guidance they can actually use.

She also works directly with individuals and families navigating NDIS, Centrelink and Aged Care — bringing the same practical, no-nonsense approach to some of the most frustrating systems in the country.

Honest. Practical. Direct. Human.

Training That People Actually Use

Most disability awareness training leaves people feeling like they should do things differently, without much idea of how. Skye's workshops are built to change that. They're practical, direct and tailored to your context — because a regional tourism operator has different needs than a local council, and the training should reflect that.

The sessions draw on both professional expertise and lived experience. The examples are real, the edge cases get addressed, and people can ask the questions they'd normally avoid. Workshops are delivered in-person or online.

Topics include:

  • Disability confidence for customer-facing teams
  • Inclusive customer service that goes beyond compliance
  • Person-centred practice for support workers and service providers
  • Communication and language around disability
  • Building inclusive workplace culture — practical strategies for leaders
  • Inclusive recruitment and onboarding
  • Advocacy and self-advocacy
  • NDIS reform — what it means for organisations and participants
  • Practical inclusion for sport, recreation and community programs
  • Half-day and full-day formats available; custom topics on request

Speaking & MC

A Speaker Who Knows This Work from the Inside

Skye brings something to a speaking engagement that most people in this space can't: she has lived the gap between what the policy says and what the experience actually is. Born with spina bifida, navigating decades of surgeries and system failures, and ultimately choosing amputation as the better of two difficult options — her perspective isn't borrowed.

Her keynotes and panels don't stop at awareness. They're built around the questions organisations actually need to answer: what does genuine inclusion look like in practice, what does it cost to get it wrong, and what does it take to get it right?

Skye also works as an MC and facilitator — bringing the same directness and warmth to event hosting, panel facilitation and workshop moderation. She adjusts to the room, not the other way around.

Topics include:

  • What genuine accessibility looks like in practice — and how to tell the difference
  • The business and community case for inclusion that goes beyond good intentions
  • Leadership, decision-making and disability: closing the gap between policy and practice
  • Workplace participation and what real inclusion looks like for employers
  • Advocacy, systems change and what happens when the system doesn't work
  • Lessons from thirty years of navigating systems that weren't designed with you in mind

What Holds

by Skye Shannon

What it takes to live when being seen isn't the same as being understood.

What Holds is a raw and honest conversation about disability, identity, resilience, advocacy, systems and what it means to be understood. It's not a motivational story or an overcoming narrative. It's what actually happened — and what it taught Skye about the world, about systems, and about herself.

Written with the same directness Skye brings to her consulting and speaking, this book is for anyone who has navigated systems that weren't built for them, advocated when they were exhausted, or wondered whether the people making decisions really understood what they were deciding.
